Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on 28 October 1967 in Atlanta. Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer who was also the first Roberts to settle in Atlanta. Her father's passion for theatre was inherited by her. in the theater at an early age. He was an actor on at the Emory University campus in 1952 as well as in various productions in Atlanta. In 1953, he joined the Air Force, and was stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he acted in an production along with Betty Lou Bredemus. They married in 1955. Their daughter, Eric Anthony, was born in 1956. Walter was a student at Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. The year 1957 was the year they had a break from the military and Walter began his studies at Tulane University. In 1960 the family moved in Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou began production on a local children's Saturday morning TV show titled Bum Bum and His Buddies that they designed and funded. In 1964 Betty Lou and Walter founded their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. The workshop lasted six years. In 1965, they welcomed two young children, Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
